Turnaround is a chord chart viewer and practice player, published by Digital Strings. This page explains what the app does and does not do with your data.

Short version

What Turnaround stores

Charts you open or import, your playlists, and your playback settings (tempo, key, choruses and similar preferences) are stored locally on your device in a local SQLite database. This data stays on your device. Turnaround has no account system, so there is nothing to sync.

Network access

Turnaround has no analytics, no crash reporting service, and no advertising. We do not know what charts you open or how you use the app, because the app never tells us.

The exceptions are the launch check and the trial in the Mac and Android apps downloaded from this site.

The launch check

When it opens, Turnaround asks digital-strings.com whether this version may run and where your trial or licence stands. The request contains the platform ("macos" or "android"), the app's build number, a random one-time number that makes the answer impossible to replay, a device identifier, and your licence key if you entered one.

The device identifier is made by hashing your device's own identifier with a value specific to Turnaround; it can't be turned back into that identifier and means nothing to other apps. We keep it, with the day it was first and last seen, to count the trial and the devices on a licence, and for nothing else. As with any web request, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) sees your IP address in order to deliver the answer.

Your email and the trial

The free trial starts with your email: Turnaround sends it to digital-strings.com, which emails you a 6-digit code (sent through Cloudflare's email service), and the code starts the trial. We keep the email with the trial and the device identifier, so that one email gets one trial, and to reach you about your licence. We send you news only if you ask for it, and every news email has a link to stop it. We never sell or share your email.

Importing from another chord chart app (Mac only)

On the Mac, Turnaround can optionally read the library of another chord chart app you have installed, so you can bring your existing charts and playlists into Turnaround. This works only if you choose that import from the add menu in the app, and only after macOS itself asks your permission to let Turnaround access data from another app (that app's container). The read is:

• Read-only - Turnaround never writes to or modifies the other app's data.
• On-device - the data is copied into Turnaround's own local database and is never transmitted anywhere.
• Permission-gated - macOS's sandbox requires your explicit consent before any app can read another app's container; you can revoke this at any time in System Settings.

This feature is unavailable on iPhone, iPad and web, since those platforms give no access to another app's data at all.

Chart links

Opening a chart link hands Turnaround a chord chart already encoded in the link itself. No data is sent anywhere to open it.

On iPhone and iPad

The iPhone and iPad app makes no request to our server at all: there is no launch check, no trial sign-up and no account. Your library stays on your device. If a later version adds the trial or an in-app purchase, this page will describe exactly what it sends before that version is released.

Children's privacy

Turnaround does not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "last updated" date above will change with it.

Contact form

The contact form sends what you type, by email, to us — nothing else is stored. Your IP address is used only to rate-limit submissions and is not stored.
